As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear Amazing Northglade Family and Staff;

Last week we had two emergency situations at our building: a tornado warning and a partial power outage. During emergencies such as these you prove yourselves to be the steady, competent and caring professionals that I have come to depend on to make our school safe and productive. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our children, in even the most harrowing times.

While students were in sheltered areas, teachers told them stories and read to them, assuring them that all would be well and that they were safe. You all went the extra mile to make sure that though students were away from home at a potentially frightening time, they were still in good and loving hands. You maintained a calm, orderly environment and set a superb example for our children to following in times of crisis. We were even more able to handle the challenging situations because of the support of Mr. Talbott. We appreciate all the extra hard work our school custodian put into keeping us all safe. He lit the dark areas for the children, accomplishing his tasks with a big, reassuring smile. I can’t state often enough how great a part in getting our students home safely you all played.

Our day to remember ended with a night to remember. In contrast to the stressful day, however, the PTO gave us a night of fun and sharing when they sponsored Skate Night at Roller World.

From the Parent Corner…Magicians Alan Kazam and Alan Smola performed their annual “Halloween Spooktacular” show at the State Theater, Sunday October 24th.  Hundreds of children attended this family friendly production that showcased magic and illusions.  Throughout the show, the magicians asked for audience volunteers. From the hundreds of children in attendance, four Northglade girls participated in different segments of the show.
Jane Swartz and Natalie Swartz were part of a group of children that helped Alan Kazam make a bird and its cage disappear! We’re still wondering where that bird went.
Natalie Howard helped make a magic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She held a paper lunch bag containing 2 slices of plain bread above her head. At the end of the trick, the 2 slices of bread were transformed into a sandwich with PBJ! How did that happen with the closed bag being held up in the air?
Isabel Stroud levitated in mid air! Alan Kazam made a hoop go around her body, with nothing holding her up. She didn’t even look frightened!
These Northglade girls rocked! The odds that out of all of the children present, 4 girls from the same school would get to participate is amazing. Our children are truly shining stars.

The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, “The children are now working as if I did not exist.”

~Maria Montessori

Dear Magnificent Staff,

We are saddened by the loss of State Rep. Robert Jones, who passed away Sunday morning. Let us remember his family and the entire Kalamazoo community. Representative Jones dedicated himself to his family and his community. He will be greatly missed.

Thank you. You are doing a magnificent job with our MEAPers. So far we are in fantastic shape and on track. We completed Reading, parts 1 and 2, and one day of Writing. For the most part, the children are concentrating and taking their time. Attendance has been high. We have had very few Make-ups, and we are all caught-up on them.

Monday the 18th is scheduled for Make-ups; therefore, you will follow your daily class schedules.

Tuesday the 19th, we are back on our MEAP Schedule, so please prepare your first graders for their rotation. According to schedule, we will do Mathematics for all grade levels.

Wednesday the 20th we are scheduled to complete part 2 of the Writing for 4th graders and Science for the 5th graders; therefore, only E 2 will need to follow the MEAP schedule. E 1 will return to your daily classroom schedules. I will complete all test Make-ups according to schedule.

Staff, let us all show our appreciation to Mrs. Callahan, Ms. Waller, and Mrs. Johnson for an outstanding job as Grade Level Facilitators.

This is a gentle reminder of the “I Can Statements and Objectives” that need to be visible and current in your classrooms.

Again, I want to thank you for your dedication to Northglade and to the children we serve. You make it all work. I love you, and I love Northglade!

“Any child who is self-sufficient, who can tie his shoes , dress or undress himself reflects in his/her joy and sense of achievement the image of human dignity, which is derived from a sense of independence.” ~Maria Montessori

From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear Families:

Our school has undergone a tremendous change. We have decreased the number of classrooms at the E1 level and increased the classrooms at the EC level. These changes have allowed us to accommodate all our families at Northglade. Thus, more children will be able to take advantage of our Montessori education. Thank you for your support during these essential changes.

Our teachers and children will enjoy using the new sinks and storage closets in many of the classrooms. The renovation areas are newly-tiled and will soon have new carpet. The bathrooms are sparkling and appealing; the papers towel dispensers have been replaced by even more sanitary blow dryers. A new computer lab is on the drawing board. Our children will soon have, literally at their fingertips, a fully-equipped, technically-advanced lab. As soon as the lab is ready, we will invite you to view it.

We love you and we love Northglade!

Thank you for sharing your children with us.

Your proud principal,

Mrs. Flora Harrell

their daughters Linnea and Kendra

OCTOBER IS MEAP MONTH

Teachers are working constantly to help our children prepare for the MEAP Test. Please make sure that your child/children eat a nutritious breakfast, get a good night’s sleep, and arrive at school on time. Testing will begin at 9:30 a.m. If children come to school too late, they will miss critical portions of the test and will have to take their test during make-up week. The test is administered to students, grades 3-5.

October is also the time we administer the COG/AT test to 2nd graders. When preparing your child for this test, please follow the same guidelines as for the MEAP.

COLLEGE GOING CULTURE

Data supports the fact that one of the key indicators of a college going culture is significant parental involvement. Here at Northglade Montessori, we are constantly on the lookout for inventive and productive ways to involve you in preparing your children for college. This newsletter will keep you posted on meaningful ways for you to help guide your child/children’s academic future.

Mrs. Carol Stewart, our District Literacy Coach and Mrs. Sylvia Washington, our Reading Recovery Lead Teacher, facilitated a training session for parent volunteers. The reading volunteers are equipped with strategies and materials that will enable our children to advance in reading. There will be a second training session Friday, October 8, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in the Library. Please consider taking part in this very rewarding opportunity to make a difference in children’s learning. Thank you to all the volunteers and to Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Washington.

News and Views – September 2010

Dear Families, Welcome back from a wonderful summer. We were delighted to see so many families at the PTO-sponsored Meet & Greet Ice Cream Social. We want to thank you for being some of the best supporting families around. Last school year you helped us to make great strides. Our students did a good job on the Reading and Math MEAP. With your support, we can climb even higher. I ask that you please take a few minutes to read this very important newsletter and keep it for future reference. ****************************************** THE FOCUS FOR NORTHGLADE STUDENTS FOR 2010-2011 Reading, Mathematics and Writing Research has proven that reading is the foundation to all other areas of study. We also know that children who are able to read with comprehension are successful in completing high school and are able to be successful in college as well. It is extremely important that our students become increasingly better readers. We want them to know their reading levels, and if needed, how they can improve their reading throughout the school year. You can help increase your student’s ability to read above grade level by making certain that they are reading at home every day. Last year we purchased new leveled reading materials for our students. Our students also receive support from our on-site Reading Recovery lead teacher; and new this year, we have an additional part- time Reading Recovery teacher to assist our first graders with reading. The District has provided us with a Literacy Coach, and a school psychologist who invest endless hours supporting our teachers and students. Northglade’s MEAP Math scores showed an increase at every grade level. Our school showed an increase from14% to 41%. We know Montessori Math is strong, with beautifully crafted materials that teach all areas of math concepts. However, since not all students experience growth at the same rate, these

students will become a major part of our focus for this year.

We are confident that the combination of the Montessori math curriculum and the district math program will help us deliver high quality mathematics instruction for all children.  You can help your child be successful in math by making sure that they complete all homework assignments and practice the math facts for quick recall.  Teachers will continue to use Test Pro in class, and some may assign it as homework.  If you have any questions concerning the homework, please call the office and leave a message for the teacher.

Writing will also be a major focus this year.  Writing is an area where our students fall behind on district tests.  Learning to become proficient writers is a process that takes practice and consistency.   You can help at home by having your child write in the following ways:  journaling, writing reports, letter writing, poetry, opinion writing and writing storiesChildren love to read what they have written to others.  Take some time to listen to them as they read their writing.

KALAMAZOO PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Every child, every opportunity, every time!

The KPS Strategic Planning Expectations for students, parents, educators, support staff, and community members are in place to support each child’s learning.

It is essential that we work together all year to support children’s learning of academic and social skills.  It is also expected that children’s social, emotional and physical well being be well supported at home and at school so that they are able to learn. Together we must unite and do our parts to prepare each child for college and a promising future. The work we do in a child’s first five years of life and in the elementary years serves as a foundation for future learning and success.

**IMPORTANT HELPFUL INFORMATION**

SOME QUICK REMINDERS:

For the safety of our children, it is important that the following procedures be consistently followed throughout the school year. Thank You!

Picking Up Students Early from School

Parents/Guardians must sign their student(s) out at the office. Office staff will then call the classroom to have your child dismissed. Please wait for your student(s) in the office.

Students Going to a Different Destination after School

When riding a different bus, your student must bring a signed and dated note from you indicating where the student is going.  The bus driver will not allow unassigned students to ride their bus.  If at all possible, we ask that you make decisions concerning any changes before school in the morning.  We do not encourage student use of phones to ask permission for last minute change of plans.

Last Minute Change of Plans

Please call the school before 2:30 pm if there is to be a last minute change of plans for the end of the school day. This allows us time to get the message to the classroom teacher and will help to facilitate the necessary change.

Children Absent

Please call the school to report all student absences.   Also, please send a note to have the absence excused when your student returns to school.

Children Late to School

School starts at 8:40 a.m. Students are late at

8:53 a.m.  Students arriving after 10:30 a.m. are marked absent for the half day.  Students receiving breakfast must be at school by 8:30 a.m. All students arriving on late buses will be served breakfast upon arrival and are not counted as being late.

ALL FAMILIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND OUR 2010-2011 OPEN HOUSE
